What is needed to renew my vehicle's Georgia license plate?
You may renew your vehicle's' Georgia license plate (tag) registration on-line(Coming soon to Barrow County), in participating counties, by-mail or in-person at the Tax Commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where you reside. Commercial vehicles registered in this state under the International Registration Plan (IRP) are registered with this Department's IRP Unit of the Motor Vehicle Division. IRP license tags are not issued or renewed at the county tax commissioners' offices in this state.

Mail-in and In-Person Renewal
To renew your vehicle's tag registration by mail or in-person, submit the following to the Tax Commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where you currently reside during your registration period. Click here for more information about where to renew your vehicle's tag registration.
- Your pre-printed bill (if you have received one that reflects correct and complete information), or a completed MV-1 application. This MV-1 application should be typed or printed in blue or black ink electronically or legibly by-hand, except for signature(s) in the registered owner(s)' full legal name(s). A natural person's full legal name(s) would be his or her complete name as shown on his or her valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. This application must be signed. If jointly owned, each owner must sign. If you received a pre-printed bill from your County Tax Commissioner's office, you should use the bill to renew your vehicle's license plate when the bill reflects complete and correct information including your name, address, the vehicle's description and the amount of ad valorem tax due.
- If you apply in-person, you must show your valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. Some counties, that allow tag registration renewal by mail, may require you to submit a copy of your valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card with your application for renewal.
- Your vehicle must be covered with Georgia liability insurance. Non-motorized vehicles and vehicle exempt from registration in this state do not require insurance coverage. - Proof that your vehicle has passed an emission's inspection, if required for your vehicle in your county. For a list of requiring counties, exempt vehicles, inspection station locations, directions, cost, etc., please call the Georgia Clean Air Force at: call 1-800-449-2471 or click here to connect to their web site.
- Pay all fees and/or taxes due (as shown on your calculated pre-bill) with cash, check or money order payable to the Office of the Tax Commissioner. Please do not remit cash through the mail. Some counties accept credit cards. The fees and taxes that are generally due at the time of renewal are: Annual registration fee ($20.00 for most passenger cars and light weight pick-up trucks); applicable ad valorem tax, annual special tag fee (when your vehicle is currently registered with a special tag tag that requires an annual special tag fee); any penalties for late renewal (when you do not renew during your registration period), and $1.00 mailing fee if your renewal decal is to be mailed to you.
