The Barrow County Senior Center Department is organized to meet the needs of our elderly in the community by promoting the physical, emotional, and economic well-being of older adults and promoting their participation in all aspects of their community life so that they can remain productive, self-sufficient, and lead useful and dignified lives.

The Senior Center is the hub of activity for the Aging Program in the County.  Meals are served to the seniors at the center totaling 9,041 for the time of January 2005 through January 2006.  Other services provided by the center are:

  • transportation services 9,441
  • recreation services 1,470
  • friendly visits 234
  • telephone reassurances 1,515
  • nutritional education 12
  • The Barrow County Senior Center enrolled 88 new clients during the 2005 year.

Trips and outside activities are a priority of the center and it’s clients.  During the year trips to the Tennessee Aquarium, a Tennessee River Boat Dinner Cruise, Helen getaway for October Fest (twice), play at the Fox Theater, visit to Stone Mountain Park, shopping at Hambricks in Anderson and (2) movies in Athens were all planned and coordinated through the Center.  Dinners out and local shopping trips were scheduled all throughout the year.  A variety of fifteen of these trips were completed in 2005.
Regular activities are completed daily, weekly and monthly.  They include Birthday Parties, Bingo Yoga, Pool, Exercise, Games, Puzzles and general socialization.  Formal dances were held, auctions and holiday celebrations were the highlights of the year.
The plans for next year are equally exciting.  Local day trips for activities.  Large once in a life-time trips planned.  Fundraising auctions, picnics and celebrations.  Activities are planned to reach the needs and desires of a diverse clientele of Seniors.
