The GIS department is a support service organization whose mission is to support all County Departments and to provide the general public with the quality service and accurate and reliable mapping products. We also maintain and approve all subdivision and road names for the entire county. GIS provides an accurate street numbering system for Barrow County. The number one goal for the GIS department is to insure that our customers receive excellent service.

Objectives:

  • Always give accurate data when exchanging information, resolving a problem, or providing a service.
  • Always update maps with supporting data.
  • Turn around time on mapping products to be within two days.
  • Turn around time on new addresses and subdivisions to be within three days.
  • Reduce number of complaints on street name and house number duplications.

As a result of University of Georgia study, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners has moved forward with the enhancement of the County’s Geographic Information System. This project scope includes Road Centerline Enhancement, Parcel Conversion, and Spatial Adjustment. All data will reside in an ESRI 9.1 Geodatabase format. The Geodatabase will allow topology rules to be applied across multiple datasets, ensuring that municipal boundaries coincide with parcel boundaries. To enhance the data even further adding attributes to road centerlines is very useful to emergency services for locating addresses and to many other departments. The completion date for the project is schedule for mid-summer of this year.

GIS’s goal is to create various mapping products and to also provide a precise street numbering database management for county needs. GIS will continue to be structured to meet needs related to a growing county. As we move forward in this fiscal year, GIS will embark on continued training, appropriate staff, public access to data, all working together toward the success of the GIS department.
