Fleet Maintenance’s main mission is to provide an efficient, comprehensive fleet management program, that fulfills both vehicle and equipment needs of all Barrow County departments and elected offices, through safe, cost effective practices, and dedicated personal service.
The primary functions and activities of the Department are as follows:
- Provide repair and preventative maintenance services for all county owned vehicle and equipment. This currently includes over 200 pieces of equipment and vehicles.
- Repair emergency services and law enforcement vehicles; install and maintain specialized equipment on emergency vehicles as necessary.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair HVAC systems in vehicles.
- Requisitions replacement parts, fuel, and lubricants.
- Maintain and repair gasoline-driven motors, pumps, compressors, and related equipment. In addition to major repairs, the department also contracts out wrecker services, and body repair.
The major issues that are faced in the Fleet Maintenance Department are as follows:
-
An evolving demand to have up-to-date diagnostic machines and manuals to service a variety of new and aging vehicles and equipment;
-
The ability and storage room to stock the many varied repair parts needed to service such a large fleet.; and
-
The ability to manage time for mechanics to get quality training on new systems, vehicles, and equipment..
During FY 2005, Fleet Maintenance completed the following services:
-
Tires installed: 200 patrol cars; 75 tires other County vehicles
-
Services completed: 800 vehicle and equipment preventative services
-
Work Orders Completed: 110 for all maintenance performed
While total work orders will still increase during FY2006, work orders for repairs are expected to decrease, as the age of the County fleet will be newer, based upon a replacement program. However, the total number of vehicles and equipment will continue to increase, and the services of the County will grow to provide for the needs of the citizens.
Fleet maintenance will continue to review the County’s vehicle and equipment fleet and make recommendations for vehicle reassignment and/or replacement to insure achievement of projected life cycle. The department will also work with County employees and Elected Officials in developing and implementing recommendations that will expand vehicle and equipment life and lower operating costs.
