The Animal Control Department, as part of the Barrow County Community, is responsible for the enforcement of the Barrow County Animal Control Ordinance.
Officers respond to stray and nuisance animal complaints from citizens, investigate complaints regarding animal cruelty, animal bites and rabies exposures. The department operates the Animal Shelter and conducts adoptions, agency transfers or rescues, and help provide a secure area for unwanted or stray animals to be kept until an owner is located. Animal Control Officers educate the public concerning animal care and welfare issues and hold semi – annual Rabies Clinics to prevent the spread of disease in the community. Three thousand people visited the Barrow County Animal Control facility during the course of 2005. These individuals help the Animal Control Department save and adopt more than 900 animals.
Further as part of Animal Controls enforcement of the Barrow County Animal Control Ordinance more than 380 requests for compliance were issued and 188 citations had to be issued.
Major activities conducted during 2005:
- Rabies Clinics were held in March and October of 2005.
- Animal Control held an adoption day at the Chautauqua Festival.
Major activities scheduled for 2006:
- Rabies Clinics will be held at several locations through out the county on different dates to improve opportunities for the public to attend.
- Animal Control related pamphlets and educational materials have been provided to the Barrow Chamber of Commerce and the Barrow County Libraries.
- Educational projects are being planned to be conducted in the schools, area clubs and organizations, and homeowner associations.
- Community Assistance Programs will be implemented to provide pet food and dog houses for needy citizens of Barrow County.
These Community Awareness Programs will benefit Barrow County by educating the citizens concerning animal care and welfare and will help animals in our community by providing the basic needs, food, shelter and veterinary care to prevent abuse and suffering.
