How to Calculate Property Tax Owed

This image is a chart that can be used to calculate property tax owed.

Once a taxpayer has reviewed the table above to see the millage rates, it is possible to estimate the property taxes owed on a piece of property. First, the millage rate must be divided by 1,000. For example, those taxpayers with property in the unincorporated areas of the county will take the 31.352 total mills and divide it by 1,000 (or simply move the decimal three places to the left) so that the total millage rate is expresses as .031352.

To estimate the amount of property taxes owed, simply multiply the assessed value of the property by the total millage rate. In Georgia, property is assessed for tax purposes at 40% of the fair market value that is on file in the Tax Assessor's Office.
